OK, so I've looked into it further, and yes, it is BT with a feature for windows PCs designed to keep me safe. I was able to go into my BT account and switch it off, however I never turned it on to begin with!

Meaning that its a function that has been activated on my behalf, by BT, although they gave me no warning of it at all. therefore I can assume that it has been / will be activated by BT across all of their systems.

Will SSL certs help? I don't know, that's above my level of knowledge, but going by the fact that I get warned by chrome every so often that a site may be unsafe if it doesn't have SSL, then this might be what is triggering BT defences?

I dunno. Anyhoo, just glad to have got to the bottom of it...
