Google do the same thing with their url-shortlinks
You can always find people that will say it hurts you, but I have never seen it on any of my own sites or my customers, and I have been doing links that way since the TGP days, where I needed to be in control in case the affiliate program made changes
+ Google use it themself, so .. that is enough for me

It's a great tip because if you have tons of links spread across tons of pages and sites making one PHP link change is the way to go.
