That's the free market at work. There was no legislation. They could've not "bowed to pressure". It's freedom - just because you're choosing to whine about their choice (likely after considerable research) doesn't change that they chose to make a choice.
I'm not really sure history is being "sanitized". You can still study how an author 70 years ago wrote 6 books with racial undertones, or how those books back then were quite normal in society. You being a cry baby about it doesn't mean anything has been "sanitized".
