I have done it 15 1/3 times now. I have taken all 3 major east/west routes. I absolutely love it! I stopped flying when they banned smoking on planes. Have not missed flying at all... except for the take off... that is fun!
Of course, when you travel by car, you get to see everything. You can stop anywhere and make as many or as few detours as you wish. You have pretty much everything you need along the way. And for the most part, a safe way to travel.
As I drive along the freeways... take a few detours to see local color... you look around and imagine nothingness.... totally empty... and wonder what it was like for the 1st travelers making the trip without marked roads, no convenient stores for food and drink.... no motels to shelter you from the elements... and of course, the threat of being slaughtered at any time.
When my mom got sick we had to leave Seattle and head back to Pittsburgh, we left during one of the worst winters in the Northwest in years, around 2011 I believe. We got caught is a hell of a snowstorm in Idaho. I mean I am behind a Semi and our Isuzu is up to the doors in its tracks.
We take the next exit.. way too much snow to be driving with a loaded trailer. We were lucky, there was one little country gas station, closed at the time, that we camped out in their parking lot.
For us, that was roughing it. Had a little food in the cooler, gas in the tank to keep warm and a light to make us feel a little secure. The snow was the most beautiful snow I have ever seen. The flakes were as big as silver dollars. A large grouping of evergreens across the street giving a green and white background to the falling snow.
We had movies on the mp3 player with sound through the car speakers was like being a giant in a tiny persons movie theater with the small screen.
Christ... I'm, babbling! Sorry, not much going on today. Wake and Bake!

Hope you all have a great Monday!
