I'm fully vaccinated and have signed up for NY's vaccination passport. The passport isn't just for vaccination, it's also so you can prove that you got tested recently. For now, there are very few places to actually use my vaccination passport - if I wanted to a ball game or a wedding it could be used. But you can also bring your vaccination card or print out the results of your COVID test. It's just the passport is on your phone, so you're unlikely to forget to bring it.
The one advantage of the passport over paper documentation is that it can't be faked, and it's much easier for venues to validate as you enter.
It's really not a big deal. People are just complaining because they want to complain about something.
