I know around that time, some shows allowed you to put your GFY username on your badge at shows. I don't think I know of anyone who "insisted" on that, though... if they did, it was probably after 15 rum and cokes and they were fucking around & this guy clearly didn't get it.
Seems more like he was just a low level employee who wasn't ever really "in" the industry.
I've never in my life received hate mail after 17 years other than from Christian and Islamic zealots spewing their religious bullshit. User feedback is usually "hey you usually post a gallery every day at 10am and you haven't for 2 days, what's up?" or something and that was pretty rare.
I think a lot of that shit is either embellished or completely made up. But I've heard similar stories from low level employees past & present. Even a lot of reps for well known companies don't know much - they were hired for their sales skills; not industry knowledge.
