And no, the whole "wife-kid-divorce-rich" thing doesn't work like that everywhere. A friend of mine is getting child support from her ex... all the $65/month of it.

As for child support it depends on many factors, mostly how well the husband/dad was doing at the time of the divorce. The courts expect the children to maintain the same lifestyle even after daddy leaves (or is kicked out). So maybe your friend lives in a low-income society or just married a broke-ass loser. There are plenty of stories of ex-husbands' financial lives being ruined by divorce.
