lol, true say. when I was born in the 70's, my parents married cuz otherwise my dad wouldn't have been permitted to be listed as my father on my birth certificate
another big reason is citizenship/ability to travel on a work permit
only reason me and my ex got officially married (we had been living as partners for years, happily) was because he got a job in Turks and Caicos and I wouldn't have been able to go with him unless I was his legal spouse. you need a work permit to live in that nation and 'common law spouse' isn't a category
same deal with my Jamaican citizenship, I got that because my husband is Jamaican, otherwise I wouldn't have fit the criteria to immigrate/attain citizenship without a ton of hassle and expense
but in general I agree, love doesn't need a piece of fucking paper
