Oh not a racial thing at all (at least not for me or people I know).
No, it's more like "No one has an apartment like that in Manhattan!" and "How can they afford such a HUGE apartment??"
Same for Mad About You, Seinfeld, The Odd Couple - they all have Hollywood set large ass apartments that we New Yorkers laugh at.
