What does a normal woman (I'm setting aside golddiggers and such) get out of marriage, exactly? The marvellous expectation that you'll be cooking dinner most nights? Or the responsibility to keep the man out of trouble? The annoying questions of "when are you having children" from grandmas? Or the legal requirement to get his permission to sell a car? The wonders of childbearing and consecutive several years of pretty much slavery (however pleasant is motherhood, no mom will tell you it is, start to finish, great fun and games)? Having to hamper your career for one, two, three goes to the maternity ward?
I'm with Matyko in the conviction that love and marriage are needed and beyond the mundane daily routine and material things, but I will still argue with McD - why do you think it's such a great position for a woman to be married? Even very happily married women sometimes sit and wonder what it'd be like to not be tied down with all the responsibilities of being a wife.
In short, I think both parties have to make sacrifices for a marriage, that's sort of just how it works, and if you think otherwise maybe you're just saying the grass is greener on the other side.
