Have you read John Varley, Cory Doctorow, Richard Kadrey, later Heinlein like Friday?
No I haven't read any of those (early-to-mid Heinlein only, who was a huge misogynist). I agree there is nothing wrong with female characters/gay characters and I do not know if the author recommended does this in excess but the reviews I read did mention "woke politics" so that's a no for me.

My only objection is when writers (and Hollywood does this more than authors) build up female and gay characters at the expense of male or white characters, often portraying straight white men as the epitome of evil and everything that's wrong with society and the future.

No, I prefer a Gene Roddenberry approach: true equality where one's sex, race, skin color, religion etc is never mentioned as anything special. It's just accepted as part of a more cohesive, unifed (and peaceful) future.
