Your virus protection should be set to automatically update itself, and should also be set to scan your HD once a week, say in the middle of the night when you are sleeping. Norton Anti Virus would be a good start. Scan your computer with it, install it, update the definitions, you should be good to go.

You can also scan for viruses using Symantec's online scanner. They also have many removal tools for you to use on their site.

Don't open any attachments that come to you unless you know exactly what they are and who they came from!!!

Visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com and patch your shit so the exploit these viruses take advantage of will be closed. Keep your critical update notification running. It would have told you a month and a half ago to patch your OS.

Try keeping CNN running in the background on the TV or check their site from time to time. Should take you 15 min to get caught up on worldly issues every day.
