I see no issue with this method. =)
My salaried programmer and I do mostly communicate via email but I think after 2 years of working together he understands my fucked up language. When I feel something is getting lost, we definitely set up a phone meeting and then he adds things to our Trello board to keep track of what we are doing. That works really well for us. He also sends me an invoice each month showing me what he did with his paid time.
If all programmers/coders had the work ethic of you both...the world would be a much better place =)
