I mostly agree. The over-produced sites can be off-putting, but it depends a lot on the style of the content. My only experience, for example, is in magazine quality photo oriented sites, so the amateur look would undermine the quality perception. But, you are correct that the homegrown look can work well for solo-girl oriented sites, particularly if it's 'quirks' help highlight the personality of the talent.
The challenge to me is keeping a personal feel while prepping it for a mobile/HTML5 world, and I think a lot of programs just gave up on this evolution. My best converting affiliate sites are still pretty old school looking, but modern browsing habits are a challenge to cater to, while keeping that look.
