I used DirectNIC 20 years ago and their prices were $15/year, which was a huge improvement over what came before, $35/year with a minimum of two years, but was seriously undercut by more and more competitors like Namecheap and Namesilo.
The "cheap" in Namecheap refers to $8.88, which was cheap at the time, and Namesilo had frequent promo prices of $6.99 or $5.99 (can't remember which now), and a one time $1 off coupon, nothing like $1 or $2 per domain.
The fact that you're just repeating Godaddy again should be enough of a clue that "almost any registrar" was not selling names for $1 or $2.
