Upsells / Cross Sells vs. Content in members area

Those of you that operate membership sites (especially interested in those who have mainstream membership sites opinions) what do you think the perfect balance between actual 'content' and additional revenue streams should be?

I remember back in the late 90s when I first joined the adult industry, upsells were pretty much everywhere in adult paysites and signifcantly lacking in mainstream site members area, these days however, it would seem the reverse is true.

More and more non-adult member based sites are padding their paid content areas with upsells and cross sells to the point they are becoming reminiscent of adult back in the day.

What would you say a good balance between the content a member is paying for and additional revenue streams inside a members area should be?

I've always used the 80/20 rule, whereby 80% of all the content is what is paid for and the remaing 20% is upsellable or content that is ad heavy.

What ar eyour thoughts on this if you own a membership site?
