Might be culturally linked to 'hunting' in the old days. Warmer climates, Savanah etc, the men tend to hunt in packs. The main way to hunt was and is persistence hunting. Men can go farther then an animal in a days time. The men would follow the animal until it collapsed.
Colder, mountainous climates men tend to hunt alone or very small groups. Trapping or tracking. American Indians hunted in packs but not the northern types.
Not sure about Eskimos.
