Just to be clear, the ribosomes have not been altered or changed to produce a particular protein. They read the three base nucleotides of the mRNA and match it to the corresponding amino acid, then progress down the sequence of mRNA to the next 3 bases, and so on, stringing those amino acids together to produce a protein. When that protein is complete, they move on to the next sequence of mRNA they happen to find.
Also, just for clarification if anyone is curious, since we generally want certain proteins at certain times, mRNA is rapidly degraded - usually on the order of minutes, but upwards to 48 hours. That's your window for protein synthesis.
