When I bought my Italian Greyhound the breeder tried to sell me on pet insurance. It felt like she was just trying to upsell me on it so I declined.
HUGE FUCKING MISTAKE!
4 months later, the dog got spooked and jumped off my 15ft high deck! The dog completely snapped his leg. It was like a compound fracture that needed emergency surgery. The surgery and recovery cost me $5,000. 6 months later he jumped over a baby gate in my house and landed awkwardly on my hardwood floor, snapping his other leg. Another 5K for surgery and recovery.
2 years later he developed a cough. So I take him to the vet because I think it's kennel cough.Vet is not really sure what it is so he tells me to keep an eye on him. Well he starts getting worse with his cough so the vet gives me this cough syrup and says keep an eye on him. One night he gets real bad and goes into this coughing and wheezing fit, so I bring him to the emergency vet hospital. They run all these tests, cat scans etc...turns out the poor dog has mesothelioma. That was another $3,500 in vet bills.
So all together i'm into this dog for almost 20k.
If you ever get an Italian Greyhound get insurance.
Here is the little shit with one of his broken legs:
