I think that 'back then' we were all pushing the limits of what our equipment could do, so say someone getting a video card, enabling them to download video direct from the camera in real time, was a big deal - Likewise a higher resolution monitor or a higher rez digital camera was cool. People would be jealous.
These days though, with tech where it is, not so much. My PC for example I built from scratch in 2019 to be able to cope with future needs. As such, there nothing it cant do for me that I want it to, even 3 years later... So cause it all 'Works' - Less to get excited about.
Its a bit like phones. At first having an iPhone or any smartphone really was cool, and you always wanted 'the next model up' cause it had a better camera or could do more things. Now however, EVERYONE has a phone and the 'innovations' are more like foldable screens etc... Most phones can do most things perfectly well, so less point in getting excited about new ones...

Same ballpark for me.
My main work computer is an 8-year-old iMac. I do need to get a new one soon because it's giving me some random issues and I'm afraid of it taking a POO at an inopportune time, but I also keep delaying that because spending the money without a noticeable difference in my daily work is kind of a bitter pill to take.
