But in our town, the local magazine store which was a stationary store kept them wrapped in paper wrappers so that you could not see the covers. And the barbershop had some sex magazines but when I went to the barber, I was embarrassed to grab one although I certainly wanted to see it.

By today's standards, most of the 1950s sex magazines were very mild. By the late 1960s, after a free speech Supreme Court decision, you could but really shocking porno magazines even if you were under 16 years of age!

Pornography of course is nothing new. The Romans and Greeks had it and when I traveled to Greece, I visited an ancient town where you could still see pornographic drawings on the walls of the public toilets.

I know that some of my subscribers blame teenage violence on video games. Others blame pornographic magazines and now pornographic internet videos for current sexual attitudes and behaviors. That just does not make sense to me. But in the 1950s, as this very short news clip indicates, the powers that be seemed to feel that they could stop teenage boys from heading in sinful directions by blocking the media. Obviously that failed not only in America but in every Western country that tried to block it.

I never did tell my dad that I read his Esquire and Playboy Magazines. I wish that he was still alive so I could share with him how my friends and I would sit around and read what he had hidden under his bed.
