I agree with the lawyer to the point that to many people get married and divorced for the wrong reasons. Sometimes it's the male other times it's the female's fault. Either way a child needs both parents - with that being said god bless the single mom's/dad's out there raising kids on their own as it's more difficult.
Discipling a child doesn't start at the phone - it starts much younger so that when discipline is handed down it's respected and understood... bad behavior has punishment. Sadly parents just ignore that and go the easy route then wonder why they are disruptive teens.
Seeing a child doing this you have to ask, "why?". It wasn't the phone (could've been anything else including a gaming controller) - it was respect and love. Unfortunately today not to many parents are at home because they have to work to pay for everything. The child doesn't understand that and rather than pick up the slack and help out around the home - they seek the attention and "family" elsewhere.
Hopefully insurance can help pay for it - but any parent should be seeking to have the child charged with arson or destruction of property but carry on parenting through the process. You're not abandoning them instead going through the training of, "taking responsibility for your actions" phase.
