Brainstorm is one of my favourite science fiction movies. I loved it. If you get a chance to see it in a theatre or very big screen TV, watch it. Most of Brainstorm is presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio and in mono sound, but expands into 16:9 Widescreen + Surround sound whenever you see the view from a character wearing the headset.
The director, Douglas Trumbull, was also trying to get his own special movie format called "Showscan", which was a high frame rate (60FPS I think) camera and projection system. The headset scenes were appearently shot in Showscan but MGM refused to back any upgrades of movie theatures to support the format.
(Another bit of trivia: Douglas Trumbull also created the company "Birkshire Ridefilm" which made "Back to the Future: The Ride" at Universal Studios in Florida. The ride was replaced with The Simpsons several years ago, but there is a "Birkshire Ridefilm" easter egg visible if you know where to look.
