Not sure if it was true or not, but I suspect people think walk away rather than get involved and end up with legal problems. Even if it was your ex.

This is why a lot of states have "good samaritan" laws so that someone trying to render aid to another cannot be sued for it. Otherwise nobody would help anyone.
