Not sure if it was true or not, but I suspect people think walk away rather than get involved and end up with legal problems. Even if it was your ex.
Besides that, your ex may have left everything to you in there will and not got around to change it. So you may be best to not do anything.

There are very strong good Samaritan laws that protect you from this, so I am not sure if it is true. They may have tried to sue and just slammed into that wall. As a former certified EMT you almost break a rib or two doing CPR if you are doing it right.
