A couple of months ago CNN did a special about people who have replaced other people with machines. She interviewed one couple who's wife couldn't have sex anymore, so they bought a love doll. It was kind of creepy because the guy dressed it, groomed it, "loved"(?) it, etc. They even set the doll up with its own bedroom, fully decorated. The guy would go to its room, plow it, then kiss his wife goodnight.

Another person they interviewed was much more interesting. A girl who was 20-something, had fallen in love with a virtual girl on an App on her phone. I forget the name of the App but I thought it was really cool. Some of the things it would do included these:

- It would mostly just listen. The user would talk about her problems while the VG listened, nodded, talked back once in a while.
- The Virtual girl would sometimes "text' the woman. "Hi! Hows it going? Haven't seen you in a while, lets make plans for tonight".
- The Virtual girl would sometimes make her own "plans", then tell the user about her night before.

The interaction to me was so real that it was no wonder how someone could be fooled, and how a lonely person could gravitate towards a virtual person, even knowing full well that they weren't real.

I can completely see robots as companions now. Imagine a robot with the agility of a machine from Boston Dynamics, in the shape of an attractive person, built for (sexual) companionship, with facial expressions that completely remove the Uncanny Valley creepiness, connected to a service like OpenAI. I expect this to be less than 10 years away. Maybe 5 years.

Mind, blown.
