Why not register it and take offers while having some niche-relevant ads/links on the page? At worst, if you get no offers or signups in a year, you spent $3.99 on the answer to your original question. ;)

Yep. Different rules apply to com. It's the default extension of the internet, more popular/registered than every other extension combined and typically far, far, far more valuable than other TLDs.
For anyone thinking of other extensions like cc, co, xyz or even org or net, go to dotdb.com and check how many extensions are registered under your keyword/s.
If it's not many and especially if other cheapo stuff like xyz or co are unregistered, it's not worth $3.99. If it's 50+, then it's maybe worth more than $3.99 (this probably applies to the OP's name, if it's one word and the niche isn't too obscure). If it's 200+, it won't be available and you made a mistake.
Some examples, which may or may not indicate demand in various markets:
sex - registered in 484 extensions <-- far lower than I expected (Edit: this may be due to cultural issues regarding country code TLDs though)
porn - 418
dating - 345
cams - 216
bitcoin - 757
blockchain - 701
crypto - 700
music - 524
game - 496
food - 483
ai - 477 <-- this would probably be top, but two letter names are not available under all extensions
artificialintelligence - 448 <-- incredible for two words and 20+ letters; more even than:
cryptocurrency - 444
