ugh, cruise ships
I'm really conflicted by them...on one hand they are important to tourism, on the other I think they're fucking evil in every way
in my last apt my balcony overlooked the pier where the cruise ships land and it was disgusting. they roll in, all of a sudden you see a gross brown stream from the ships as they dump...whatever into the fucking water we swim in, and for the entire time they're docked their fucking smoke stacks pour out gross smog into the air we breathe. it stinks, literally
I guess the peeps on the ships get used to it
not just environmentally, but in terms of treatment of ship employees. unsafe conditions and the passengers being heavily regulated as to where they can go 'pon docking so lots of locals don't really see a cent of that tourism money
the ships fly foreign flags even though they are headquartered in the US and operate out of US ports, so they don't have to abide by environ and health and safety standards (including for passengers) and don't have to pay the same taxes they would if registered in the US. that means US tax payers are getting shafted too for the sake of the profit of billion dollar companies
also most crime on ships doesn't have to be reported. get sexually assaulted on a ship, drown in a pool without a lifeguard, 'fall of the deck', etc etc? nope, doesn't need to be reported. cruises seem to be paradise for rap!sts and murderers
so yeah, conflicted. they do bring money into my country but the real cost of that money is far higher for everyone
aside from all that, seems so boring. "yeah, I wanna go travelling and hang out with peeps from my own place"
a wicked vid on this topic is Hasan's
The Real Cost of Cruises
it's really worth a watch
