About 7 years ago, I had a subscription, noting they were covering emerging artists and overall look surpassed Juxtapoz in quality.
The next year, the subscription did not renew, I dropped Heavy Metal a line, did not hear back, and did not have the time to go chasing a new subscription. Their loss.
In terms of the look and quality of the writing, Heavy Metal was stepping back up to that iconic standard of the 70s & 80s, helmed by Grant Morrison of Arkham Asylum and Doom Patrol fame. In contrast, Juxtapoz had severely lost the edge, going for a safer modern art look that reflected many of the art publications that Juxtapoz founders were originally critical of.
