You don't. Period. Marriage is a way of saying "we're together and commit to each other along with not to see anyone else" sort of deal. In short "I choose you". Either party can ask for it and if it wasn't such a big deal then why do gay couples fight for that right?
Though in Canada and other countries there is something called common law.
Problem is that the courts step in if there is a problem - and should you be living together which most couples do and even if they aren't married some rules still apply and you can get screwed
When you start the process of common-law separation, you'll need to consider the same legal obligations as those who are married, including division of property, finances, spousal support, child support and parenting matters.
Either way - kids will screw all that up.
