Extreme Short Version: Paperwork fuckups - From US Government - Both with my visa, and my deportation papers.
Short'ish' version: Visa didn't get renewed correctly, therefore I was technically a visa overstay. Despite being legally married to a US citizen, I was still 'rounded up' - Held in jail for 6 and a half months (Legally I could only be held for the 6, but they managed to stretch it out with 'processing time in/out) - Deported in 2006 with botched paperwork saying I was deported in 2002!
When I looked at returning, it was up to me to provide the correct paperwork. All my paperwork said 2002, so there was no record their end - ie was providing, as they saw it - False paperwork.
Complete and utter pigs ear made of it. Therefore I never came back - Yes, I probably '
could' come back now (for vacation) as it's been nearly 20 years, but it involves me getting immigration lawyers involved and an entire costly performance, so why bother ?
There a few places in this world that I have have never been to / would like to go, so I'll spend my money on that instead of the American economy.
I have no real hard feelings about it - I'm pretty sure the life i have built for myself in the UK is better than I would have had, if I had returned
