A complaint filed with U.S. authorities alleges that Mastercard and Visa were aware that their networks were being used to pay for illegal content on OnlyFans and turned a blind eye, according to Reuters.
According to the whistleblower, who is, according to Reuters, a senior financial compliance expert, the two companies knew that their networks were being used to pay for illegal pornographic content (child pornography, sex trafficking) on OnlyFans since at least 2021, because they were allegedly warned by the authorities of the presence of this content on this platform.
As of this writing, neither Visa nor Mastercard had responded to the Journal 's questions on the matter.
The two giants of the credit card sector have, however, reacted in several American media outlets.
Visa has said that institutions and merchants that fail to meet the company's "strict compliance requirements" will be banned from its network. The company said it uses best practices to "deter" and "detect" illegal activity and "remediate" it.
Mastercard, for its part, argued that it had received no evidence that illegal activities had occurred, assuring that the company has "robust governance standards", a "comprehensive compliance program" and "strong internal controls".
