I'll agree that this sounds like a price issue. You get what you pay for and all that.
Would colocation be an option for you, since you don't want managed hosting? You have a lot more control on the hardware that way.
Some data centers offer 1u and 2u rental spots for $100-200/month. You would purchase the server and install it yourself. Some offer services that will reboot it for you, but basically you would be on your own to manage it. Some 1u and 2u Supermicro or Dell PowerEdge's can be had for as little as $1,000-$2,000 + storage costs, for 3-5 year old boxes. Despite their age, these are pretty beefy machines, depending on your use case. I had a client who did this and ended up reselling via WHMCS for a while.
I would still recommend one of the hosting partners who offer managed hosting and advertise on gfy. Even if you don't want managed hosting, they take on the risk of the hardware, but they're more expensive than OVH.
