With several stores I've been able increase AOV (by getting them to add more to the cart) by having a visible progress indicator (such as $XX left for free shipping or free bonus) that updates live as they add to the cart.
Abandoned carts can be a goldmine all on their own when properly addressed as well, remember these people were much of the way to a purchase. The most basic is simply a reminder to them, but you can get more advanced as well.
