You miss my point.
The surfer doesn't give any thought to design.
If it looks professional and is easy to navigate, they'll probably just look at the pictures and then reach for their CC.
What impresses other webmasters does not necessarily work for the surfer.
Peer recognition is all very nice, but it doesn't pay the rent.
It's like companies that win awards for creative advertising. Oftentimes, the advertising didn't actually result in an increase in sales (or a measurable one anyway). But it impressed some committe, and that's all that really matters.
