I remember the good old days as well....
Hooper has pretty much summed it up, though he definately makes it sound much more romantic ( and of course he is a realitve newbie

Just 2 things to add, first - threaded boards were not around in the old days - at least not the fancy ones that everyone has now. So I think the flat board lasted until the threaded boards became top notch, with intergrated graphics, ease of use, control for the admins, etc....
Second anf its cheaper to buy threadboard software now, then develop your custom flatboard software with all the bells and whistles.
