MetaMan, blame californians if you like, but keep in mind that reagan was elected president, and jessie the body ventura, clint eastwood and virtually every celeb that runs gets elected anywhere.
people feel like they know celebs, and that makes more people come out and vote. ever see someone meet a celeb? they usually address them in a familiar way like they are old friends. they FEEL like they are friends since they've seen this person happy, sad, in love, and kicking ass on the screen. and since they feel like they know them almost like a friend, they vote for them like they would for a friend.
and people willing to do what celebs tell them is certainly a part of advertising. and it works! buying things because they endorse them is silly - there's no reason their taste should be similar to yours. but most u.s. residents do it.
we are obssessed with celebs. we want to see them naked, we want to know who they're dating, who they married, what they wear to awards and shopping.
perhaps we as a people should be taught the truth - actors and singers are entertainers. they don't know about us, they don't care about us, and their work in is their art, not in their lives. they probably shouldn't be elected to office unless we're convinced they can do a better job by a track record in a smaller office.
