Here's the billboard hot 100 pop chart for dec. 21st,1968, the number one singles were
1. 'i heard it through the grapevine' by marvin gaye (Motown)
2. 'for once in my life' by stevie wonder (Motown)
3. 'i'm gonna make you love me' by supremes & temptations (Motown)
4. 'soulful strut' by the african american Young-Holt unlimited (Brunswick)
6. 'cloud nine' by the temptations (Motown)
7 'love child' by the supremes (Motown)
9 'who's making love' by johnnie taylor (Stax)
Remember, this was all during a time when having a song on this chart meant you actually had to sell 1,000,000 or more singles. Now a days the billboard singles chart is made by monitoring airplay as well as a few sales.
7 out of 10 of these records were by black artists during one of the most racially turbulent times of the decade.
6 out of those 10 records were on wholly owned black labels Motown and Stax. That means those labels were getting 100% of the money. Not 50% like Cash Money (who only got $20mil not 60) Not 25% like Bad Boy. Not 30% like Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit (in total).
Stax and Motown owned and distributed their music.
Black artists often dominate the singles charts especially during the last 10 years thanks to rap but it seems like, if anything, black people should be more pissed when looking at these charts instead of being proud because it's one big step backwards.
What's even funnier is White people no longer own it either. Here's who owns most of your favorite artists rap, country, rock and pop:
Germans - BMG- Jive, Arista, RCA, J, Outkast, all the Boy Bands + Britney and Christina, Alan Jackson,r. Kelly,Dave Matthews
French - Universal Music Group/Interscope/Def Jam/Island/others, Emenim,50 Cent,Shania,Limp Bizkit,
Japanese - Sony- Columbia/Epic, Beyonce,Johnny Cash,J-Lo,B2K,
The British - Emi-Capitol/Virgin, Elvis, Keith Urban,Janet Jackson, Lenny Kravitz,Radiohead,Chingy,Coldplay
The only thing owned by American white people is Warner Brothers. Unfortunately Warner has been in the biggest slump for the past 10 years. Very few hits have been coming out of it. This is why they are in discussions to sell to either the Brits (EMI) or the Germans (BMG).
How ya like them apples?
