actually, if you're looking for cheap, gigabyte makes a decent ati card for about $100... it's a 9200 with 64mb ram, dvi and dsub i believe. i was thinking about grabbing that for a new machine. not stellar, but for a good workstation should do the trick just fine.
another note on the 9800's. i could be wrong on this, but most of the knockoffs like saphire, etc seem to follow the reference to a T. at least, in pictures they look basically identical to the ati version. personally, i have never bought a knock off ati, the gigabyte would be the first one. for perfomance, i always get the true ati's.
the drivers used to suck horribly for ati (i know, i used them then). but, the new catalyst series of drivers seem to be pretty good, i haven't any problems with the catalyst series. i think they finally got that fixed (knock on wood!).
