I read an article a couple of months ago (I forget the source) that went into detail about these reality shows. They pointed out that the initial excitement from Survivor and Big Brother have worn off. And with the sudden surge of reality shows the producers would have to get more and more outlandish to keep the desensitized public happy.
They predicted things would get so crazy that eventualy the "reality kick" would kill itself out. It looks like they were right. They are pushing the edge a bit to far now to draw viewers and its starting to backfire.
I am going to try and find the source of that article it was pretty good.
