You're saying that it was a political victory? The US was winning the war in absolute terms. It just lost the political will after the Tet Offensive of 1968...hence it was a political loss NOT a military one.
Vietnam lost over a million people and really was on the ropes until the US decided to scale down and phase out.

Though if they did stay, keeping a peace would be as much of a challange as it is in Iraq I'd guess
