It also depends on how you were raised. I grew up fairly poor with a frugal blue collar dad. He left a tip when we went to the steak house, but I realize now that he tipped about 5% or less. This was normal to me until I became an adult and realized that leaving a dollar for a party of 5 (two adults and 3 kids) is not acceptable. I actually trained my dad to be a better tipper after I learned. I'm sure his blue collar father didn't know any better either.
Education stops the problem.
OR...we could abolish the whole tipping thing and just pay higher prices at restaurants, since I don't really think the promise of a tip leads to better service these days anway. Just pay them $15 an hour and people will work hard to keep their job.
