An add on to this fact is the term "Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole" originated from this germ warfare campaign. When they told the soldiers to gather up the infected gear the soldiers stated, "We wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole!" - so they were given 11 foot poles.

*The term "Tank" came about when they first introduced them to the front lines during WWI. They were covered with tarps and when the soldiers asked what was under the tarps they were told water tanks (Tanks for short). The name stuck.

*The salute came from Medieval times when Knights would pass each other, they would raise their visors with thier right hands. One reason was to expose their faces and the other was to show that their hands were clear of weapons.
