And there's no reason that they shouldn't be profitable.They should be making loads of cash. In which case, the tickets shouldn't cost as much as they do, and they shouldn't be needing hand outs.

Are you aware of the reasons the government bailed them out? Here's a hint: It kept victims of 9/11 from suing the airlines AND it kept them in business when the public was afraid to fly AND it allowed them to give refunds for customers who had bought tickets and were afraid to fly. If you think they did this strictly as a welfare action towards the AIRLINES, you're mistaken.
I'm not saying many of them were being badly run (and still are) but again, we either wouldn't be flying anywhere if that money wasn't granted or we'd be paying $3K+ for each and every plane ticket.
