Copyrights don't need to be registered officially, but they should be published in order to assure you the longest period of protection.

Patents... well... it really depends on what it is. Basically, it should be something pretty unique, and must be a process, system, device etc. rather than an idea, publication, form, etc. And if you want a patent, get a lawyer.
