Lurker is right that the T-Mobile deal is the best thing going right now for staying in touch on the road. You pay roughly $200 for the PC card that goes in your laptop and then it is $30 per month for unlimited connectivity. It doesn't count against cell minutes and doesn't interfere with you using the phone. Speeds are similar to dial-up (I get about 42 - 48kbps typically) so it is slow but the advantage is it is available anywhere you have cell phone coverage so it works in hotels, airports, or even to look up mapquest in a rental car.

Jeffery is right that if you need broadband speeds, then wifi hotspots are the way to go. Practically every hotel, airport, and starbucks has wifi connectivity now so with a 802.11b PC card you can have high speed access in any of those locations. You can get the card for well under $100 and it typically costs about 10 cents a minute (or with T-Mobile you can sign up for a $20 per month for unlimited usage account though you will encounter hotspots that aren't covered with their plan).

Good Luck!
