I'm based in the Philippines. Big family sizes are quite the norm in the rural areas of the Philippines. Typical family sizes range from 6 to 15. I'm sure its the same for many rural areas of other parts of the world because of the economics of this situation--the more children, the more helpers the parents have when it comes time to plant or harvest.
Unfortunately, this has the structural effect of miring the countryside in poverty.
Modern family planning definitely should focus more on QUALITY children as opposed to quantity. The higher the quanitity of kids, the less resources can be devoted to make sure they have a QUALITY childhood and education.
