hsitory of the vibrator - true

Saw this on a show on TLC (the learning channel). I assume it is true -- it was a science show.

In the late 1800's/early 1900's women were frequently diagnosed with "hysteria" -- a catch-all diagnosis for being tense, nervous, depressed, etc.

A common form of treatment involved the doctor rubbing the woman's clitoris to orgasm. This was not considered "sex". Sex was something that involved penetration. This was just stimulation of the nervous system. Many women considered the treatment quite effective.

The problem was that some women took a long time to cum. Doctors would get tired, and it could take a lot of time away from their other patients. So -- a doctor invented a device that would speed things along and not require so much effort on his part.

The rest is history.
