My wife breeds siamese cats, and their personality depends a LOT on how they are handled when they are kittens. Our cats will come when they are called, or jump into the shower with you.
On the other hand, we have purchased other siamese cats that act like you described.
My suggestion for a first cat would be to go to a local animal shelter and get a mixed-breed cat there.
