I PERSONALLY passed out every single case of food and bottle of water we were carrying. They were sending their kids out in the street to beg while they were standing back in the shadows, because some were rightfully scared. I went out of my way, as did many others, to go personally over to them, give them a meal and a bottle of water and tell them it was all gonna be good. They ALL wanted Hussein brought down.
THIS is what using force accomplishes. The people aren't stupid. They may not be at college level, but they know their leader is an asshole. Bomb the fuck out of their country enough and sooner or later they are gonna get sick and damn tired of it and take that fuck down. They know we are fighting FOR them. Not against them.
This is ALSO a part of every single soldiers job. To make damn sure that innocent people are helped along the way. Because if they didn't exist, then there's no point.

I've no doubt the military was concerned about the Iraqi's during the Gulf War. But certainly you'd agree that Sadam and his top supporters have lead a lifestyle roughly comparable to pre-war days, while average citizens there have seen immeasurable misery and suffering.
Your point about prodding the population to overthrow the dictatorships is true, but the U.S. has tried this approach in the past and it hasn't been successful.
It just seems as though folks are hoping for bombings and missles so they can visually see revenge take place. If Bush decides that's the way to go - I'm all for it. I've got confidence in the guy.
My preference, however, would be for massive intelligence - maybe months worth - to pinpoint all these groups, or as many as possible, then unleash hell all at once with special ops, covert assinations, and the like.
Destroy the bulk of it all at once. Then give the CIA permission to kill at will to avoid a rise from reoccurring.
Widespread, blanketed destruction in already impoverished nations just doesn't appeal to me. (But I will confess, if I got to watch CNN footage of Kabul being wiped off the face of the earth, I'd probably smile)
